Grace, Year 6 on why she loves Robotics and how her focus and perseverence is sowing her path for future Robot competitions.

Grace has been a student at Panyaden since 2011. She not only loves Robotics, her current passion, but also like playing the ukulele and the piano, drumming on pillows and, like every kid, jumping on the trampoline during her free time.

We posed a few questions to Grace and her mother Khun Fah in order to understand the process that she followed to assess her skills and qualities. We asked her about her aims for the robotic competition and how she sets goals to help realise and maximise her potential.

Can you tell us when Grace started showing interest in robotics and what provoked that interest?

Khun Fah: We wanted her to learn one of the most important skills for the future: coding. We feel that this will give her more opportunities in life. In May, we introduced Grace to the world of basic coding through robots starting from coding micro:bit and then programming it in the  C/C++  language. Grace learnt fast and really enjoyed this activity. She was able to concentrate for hours. Once she gained more confidence in what she is doing, she decided to start competing.  I think she did well, especially when it comes to concentration. She was able to control her emotions and stayed focus under pressure. She also learnt to accept that winning isn’t everything.

What did you enjoy about robotics and why are you passionate about this?

Grace: I like robotics because I am able to code the robot in different ways, track the block code and typing codes to make the robot move. I had a lot of fun with this new experience and I also made new friends.

What were the obstacles and what did you do to overcome them?

Khun Fah: This is a new experience for both of us. Our main obstacle was the innovative technology that we are not familiar with. I am so impressed by the ability of the young generation. This is a good opportunity for us to learn new things and improve ourselves.

Grace: One of the obstacles is, when I get really excited, my heart starts to beat fast, and I cannot concentrate with the coding but I can overcome it by concentrating on breathing, to just breathe in and out slowly.


Can you tell us which Wise Habits you used to help you before, during and after the competition?

I used Sati when I got too excited or started to get angry. I used Viriya to remind me to keep trying and not to give up too easily.

What did you learn from this?

Grace: First, I learned a new language: coding. I also learned the importance of keeping the battery charged for the robots. But most importantly, I learnt to understand myself and how to control my emotions better.

As a parent, how do you support and encourage your child?

Khun Fah: We encourage her to make decisions by herself and to do her best once she decided to do something, regardless of the outcome! We trust that she is able to overcome the obstacles with Sati.

What advice would you give to someone who would like to join robotics competition like you?

Grace: The robotic competition is a fun and exciting experience. But, you must keep practicing and have lots of patience and concentration to succeed.  It is also a very important skill to have in life.

Who would you like to thank for helping and supporting you?

Grace: I would like to thank my coach who taught me everything about coding and robotics. And my family for their patience and supporting my passion for robotics.

On Monday 23rd of September, students and teachers took action to clean up the school and sorted all waste materials into their proper bins at the Green Stations. This sets an example for the whole school to be responsible and sustainable in Repairing, Recycling, Reducing and Reusing what consume daily. Not wasting our resources is key to reducing the impact of pollution and climate change in all aspects of our life. Many thanks to all the students, teachers and the PYD Sustainability committee for their dedication and commitment to making Panyaden Waste-Free!

เมื่อวันจันทร์ที่ผ่านมา พวกเราชาวปัญญาเด่นได้ร่วมกันทำความสะอาดโรงเรียน และฝึกแบ่งแยกประเภทขยะให้ถูกต้องตาม ‘สถานีสีเขียว (Green Stations)’ รวมทั้งเรียนรู้แนวปฏิบัติเพื่อลดขยะที่ต้องนำไปกำจัดจริงๆ ในชีวิตประจำวันให้เหลือน้อยที่สุดตามหลักการ 4R คือ Repair (ซ่อม) Recycle (รีไซเคิล) Reduce (ลด) และ Reuse (ใช้ซ้ำ) การปลูกฝังค่านิยมให้เด็กๆ รู้จักใช้ทรัพยากรอย่างรู้คุณค่า คือกุญแจสำคัญสู่การลดผลประทบด้านสิ่งแวดล้อมและภาวะโลกร้อน ขอขอบคุณนักเรียน คุณครู และคณะกรรมการด้านความยั่งยื่น (PYD Sustainability committee) ในความมุ่งมั่นตั้งใจที่จะพัฒนาปัญญาเด่นให้เป็น ‘โรงเรียนไร้ขยะ’ ในอนาคต

The Gift of Language
Giving your child the gift of multiple languages is one of the greatest gifts you can give your child. Speaking another language opens doors to so many things. Not only does it open doors to personal connections, but it also allows us to understand how others view the world and how we can better work together for a greater cause.

Language Learners Add Value
At Panyaden, we view our language learners as assets to our community. We understand that these students bring so much value to our school in terms of their different languages, cultures, experiences and skills. As educators, we focus on all the things our language learning students CAN do instead of highlighting their deficits.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)
The way we support our English language learners at Panyaden is through co-teaching. Because we see these students with all their strengths and assets, we know the best way to support their English language development is in the classroom, alongside their already English proficient peers.

EAL teachers co-teach with homeroom teachers. The homeroom teacher is the content specialist, the EAL teacher is the language specialist. Co-teaching means that the teachers plan lessons together, teach together and assess together. Co-teaching can take two forms. Either, the EAL teacher is present in the classroom and supports the English language development directly. Or, the EAL teacher gives indirect language support through materials or scaffolds she created when she is unable to be in the classroom.It is important to remember that English language learning students are always supported in their English language development, regardless whether the EAL teacher is present in the classroom or not.

  • Language learning takes time. Social English, the English we use to communicate with family and friends, can usually be learned in a short amount of time. This can take anywhere from a few months to one or two years. Learning academic English, the English used at school, takes much longer to develop. This usually takes between five and seven years, possibly even longer. True language learning never stops!
  • Be a reading role-model for your child. Create an environment in your home in which reading is valued. Make sure your child sees you read. Discuss the things that you read with your child in your home language. Your child should read books in English, as well as their home language. Let your child choose books – don’t choose for them. Let them read widely across different genres.
  • Use your home language. Make sure your child’s home language is strong and keeps being developed. Giving your child a strong foundation in their home language is crucial to additional language learning. Regularly ask what your child is learning about in school in your home language. This helps your child to make connections and solidify their knowledge and understanding.
  • Help us support your child. Your child’s journey of English language development is made easier when we all work together. Talk to the EAL team if you have any questions about your child’s English language learning. Each child is different and we are more than happy to talk with you about what your child needs at each step of the way. We invite you to attend our parent information sessions to learn more about the language learning process.
  • And most importantly – be proud of your child! What your child does on a daily basis is difficult. Your child is learning in English and learning English at the same time. Notice your child’s small successes and celebrate them. Tell them that you are proud of what they are doing!

Here are some questions that parents often ask:

How long will my child need EAL support?
This depends on how quickly your child will be able to learn the academic English needed to function at grade level. Remember, learning academic English is a long process. It usually takes between five and seven years. Certain factors speed up the language learning process, others can slow it down.

How will we know about our child’s abilities in English?
This will be communicated to parents through parent-teacher conferences and reports. You are welcome to contact your child’s EAL teacher individually to discuss your child’s progress.

Annual Fire drill practice at Panyaden

Learning about fire safety in a memorable and meaningful way!
On Friday, 13th of September, Panyaden students, teachers and staff took part in a fire drill conducted with the Namphrae Pattana Municipality. Key safety points of the training were on how to evacuate the building in case of fire, knowing the safest route, where to assemble outside and who to report to.The students not only learnt how to carry out the school’s fire evacuation plan with speed and efficiency, but also enjoyed some time exploring a real fire truck and an ambulance.

Our many thanks and appreciation to all the teachers and staff, especially to the Nam Phrae Fire team for their time and dedication in teaching us about the importance of fire and emergency safety. 



เมื่อวันศุกร์ที่ ๑๓ กันยายนที่ผ่านมา นักเรียน ครู และบุคลากรปัญญาเด่นได้เข้าฝึกซ้อมอพยพหนีไฟร่วมกับเทศบาลน้ำแพร่พัฒนา เราได้จำลองสถานการณ์ขณะเกิดอัคคีภัย โดยฝึกเคลื่อนย้ายนักเรียนออกจากตัวอาคารอย่างเป็นระบบเพื่อรายงานตัว ณ จุดรวมพล นอกจากจะได้รับความรู้แล้ว นักเรียนตัวน้อยของเรายังตื่นเต้นสุดๆ ที่มีโอกาสได้สำรวจรถดับเพลิง และรถพยาบาลฉุกเฉินอย่างใกล้ชิดอีกด้วย

“More Than Just A Bowl of Rice”

Two weeks after the Panyaden Rice Planting Day, our students returned to the paddy field to cultivate the rice and see how it is growing. This is a true community activity that involves students, parents and teachers, emphasizing #enthusiasm and #perseverance (Viriya) from growing the seedlings, preparing the field, right up to the time the rice is on the table. Students will now have a chance to watch it grow and then take part in the harvest with their parents. To complete the cycle of awareness, students will take the rice to the rice mill and finally bring it back to school and offer it to the cooks. Knowing the journey from the seed to the rice in their bowl, Panyaden students can truly appreciate every grain of rice on their plate and understand the important role we play in this vast natural ecosystem.

Learning tips from Kru Pond: Discipline

The root of the word “discipline” means “a follower” or “one who learns from a teacher”. True discipline does not rely on forcing or threatening and does not use reward or punishment because those are outside factors. True discipline means that a student follows a teacher willingly and with enjoyment. Expecting high output does not equate to building discipline. We should instead focus on a student’s relationship with the activity. This is the reason why we can remember the happiness we felt when we learned something more than the actual content. Having a good relationship with each other is the key to building a student’s discipline. If you want to teach them something, show and teach them with lots of Metta in your heart.

Secondary Building Blessing, Dhamma Talk, and One-Day Meditation Retreat

We were honoured to have Venerable Phraraja Bajaramanit (Ajahn Jayasaro) and Ajahn Jiew preside over the Blessing Ceremony for Panyaden’s Secondary Building on Thursday 5th September 2019. Later in the evening, Ajahn Jayasaro shared his wisdom at the Dhamma Talk held at the Assembly Hall. 
Highlights of his teaching include:
  • Having different views should not stop us from respecting and befriending others.
  • We should not hold onto our views too tightly but instead be open to hearing the reasons others think differently and change our mind if appropriate.
  • It is helpful to remember the times we were convinced we were right about something only to find out later that we were wrong.
  • A mind trained in meditation is more skilful at seeing emotions for what they are and saves us from identifying with them and creating suffering for ourselves. 
Respectively, Ajahn Jiew then lead a One-Day Meditation Retreat on Saturday 7th September 2019.
Some key observations include:
  • We all know that sooner or later we will have to face pain. Working on peacefully coexisting with some pain during meditation can be a good practice.
  • Meditation does not always have to be about observing the breath. We can sometimes meditate about the particular topic and this can bring clarity in the mind. 
  • Walking meditation can be particularly efficient when contemplating an idea or an issue.
  • While walking meditation done at a very slow pace can help strengthen our focus, we can benefit a lot from doing walking meditation at a normal pace because we can then be better equipped to use it on a daily basis.
We, at Panyaden are ever grateful for their kind support and wise teachings, and our upmost thanks to all the students, teachers, staff, support team and participants in making the three day event a blissful experience.

Panyaden 12 Wise Habits: Avihimsa

Avihimsa is a Pali word which means not causing harm. To practise ‘Avihimsa’ is not to say or do anything that creates suffering for oneself or for others and also not to say or do anything that creates or encourages the cause of suffering in oneself or others. This includes avoiding words or conduct which provoke negative thoughts or instigate harmful actions.

Avihimsa relates particularly to the Buddha’s teaching on moral conduct. The Buddha taught about the benefits of ‘right speech’ and ‘right action’ and proposed an essential minimum of 5 moral precepts (Sila) for lay people to follow:

1. To abstain from killing any living creatures
2. To abstain from stealing
3. To abstain from sexual misconduct
4. To abstain from false speech
5. To abstain from intoxicants

These are not an empty formula dictated by tradition or religious scriptures, but rather a practical means to ensure one’s speech and actions harm neither others nor oneself. They are essential pre‐conditions for the development of a peaceful mind (Samadhi) and arising of wisdom (Panya).

‘อวิหิงสา’เป็นคำภาษาบาลี มีความหมายว่า การไม่ทำร้ายหรือเบียดเบียนผู้อื่น การปฏิบัติตามหลัก ‘อวิหิงสา’ นั้น นอกจากไม่ทำร้ายร่างกายจิตใจ หรือชีวิตของตนเองและผู้อื่นแล้ว ยังต้องหลีกเลี่ยงการกระทำใด ๆ ที่อาจทำให้บุคคลอื่นเกิดทุกข์หรือไม่สบายใจ รวมถึงการหักห้ามวาจาและความคิดในทางลบ อันนำมาซึ่งการกระทำที่เป็นการเบียดเบียนอีกด้วย

‘อวิหิงสา’ สอดคล้องกับหลักคำสอนของพระพุทธเจ้าในเรื่องความประพฤติด้านศีลธรรม ท่านทรงสอนให้เรา ‘พูดดี’ และ ‘ทำดี’ นอกจากนั้น ท่านยังได้เสนอหลักปฏิบัติอันเป็นพื้นฐานสำคัญสำหรับฆราวาส 5 ข้อ ที่เรียกว่า ‘ศีล 5’ อันประกอบไปด้วย

1. การละเว้นจากการฆ่าฆ่าสัตว์ ตัดชีวิต
2. การไม่ลักขโมยสิ่งของ ของผู้อื่น
3. การไม่ประพฤติผิดในกาม
4. การไม่พูดเท็จ
5. การละเว้นเครื่องดื่มมึนเมา

คำสอนเหล่านี้ไม่ใช่ตำราที่ว่าต่อกันมา หรือ คัมภีร์ทางศาสนา แต่เป็นหลักปฏิบัติที่จะทำให้เราไม่คิดทำร้ายต่อตัวเองและผู้อื่นด้วยคำพูดและวาจา ทั้งยังเป็นวิถีทางแห่งการยกระดับจิตใจสู่ความสงบมีสมาธิ และการเกิดปัญญา
